Jacobus Theodorus, called Tabernaemontanus ("Jacob Dietrich of Bergzabern"; c. 1522 in Bergzabern, Latin Tabrnae Montane - 1590 in Heidelberg), was a German physician, pharmacist, professor of medicine and botany, and author of one of the most widely used German herbarium. His encyclopedic Kreuterbuch was an attempt at a universal survey of the known flora of Europe. The illustrations by an unknown engraver are based on woodcuts published in the works of Mattioli, Dodoens, Clusius and de Lobel. - Johann Caspar Bauhin, 1560-1624 and Hieronymus Bauhin, 1637-1667 (father and son, both Basel physicians) expanded Tabernaemontan's herbarium considerably. - Engraved title page fully taped, continuously slightly browned, otherwise still very well preserved.
