Grosz, George

George Grosz, born Georg Ehrenfried Groß (1893, Berlin - 1959, Berlin), was a German-American painter, graphic artist and cartoonist. His style was gradually influenced by Expressionism, Futurism, and Dadaism, and he became a member of the New Objectivity group. He became famous for his criticism of Weimar Republic society. He emphasized the negative aspects of big city life and social differences.
Gross entered high school in Stolp in 1902. But he was expelled from it when he returned the teacher's field. From 1909 to 1911 he studied at the Königlich Sächsischen Kunstgewerbeschule (Royal Saxon School of Art and Industry) in Dresden, then at the School of Art and Industry in Berlin until 1916. In the printmaking class he was a pupil of the Prague-born Emil Orlik.
Grosz's great dream came true in 1932, when he visited the United States for the first time. The Art Students League in New York, an art school with a long tradition, invited him to teach a class of nudes. Grosz taught there from June to October. At the same time, he published drawings in magazines such as The New Yorker.
By January 1933, it was clear that the Nazis were coming to power in Germany. On 12 January, less than three weeks before Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor, Grosz and his family emigrated to the USA.
Meanwhile, the suppression of art that did not come from official propaganda continued in Germany. In 1937, an exhibition called Entartete Kunst (Perverse Art) was organized in Munich, which featured works by both avant-garde artists and realists who had criticized the Nazis before 1933. 385 of his works were confiscated from museums and galleries, some of them burned.
He returned to Berlin in May 1959 in the hope of a permanent return. He settled in the same house at 5 Savigni Square where his paintings survived the war. On the morning of 6 July, a newspaper carrier found him dead in the entrance hall of his house. He had returned from a night out and had fallen down the stairs.
