(Holbein, Hans der Jüngere). Dance of Death. "Imagines mortis, Duodecim Imaginibus praeter priores, totidemque inscriptionibus, praeter epigrammata e Gallicis a Georgio Aemylio in Latinum versa, cumulatae". Lyon: Jean Frellon, 1547. (96) leaves with a small printer’s mark on the title page and 53 woodcuts (each approx. 6,5:5 cm) by H. Lützelburger (monogram ‘HL’ on woodcut on leaf C4 verso) and others, after Holbein, in the text. Bound with: Bar-Kepha, Moses. "De Paradiso commentarius ... ex Syriaca lingua nuper tralata per Andream Masium Bruxellanum". Antwerp: Plantin, 1596. First edition. 276 pp., (2) leaves. 8vo. Full-leather binding of the 17. century.
Two books in one volume. – In Holbein’s work, a further 12 woodcuts are added here to the 41 from the 1538 edition: the woodcut of a beggar (first appearing in the 1545 edition) and eleven entirely new (previously unpublished) ones: a soldier, a gambler, drunkards, a fool, a robber, a blind man, a cart driver and four woodcuts depicting children (see http://www.dodedans.com/Eholbein.htm). – Slightly browned. The leaves of Holbein’s book were trimmed across the bottom and, in some cases, the top as well, as early as the 17th century to standardise the format; one blank leaf was inserted after D5. With some underlining and marginal notes.
