A collection of thematic historical essays that was conceived as a more popular companion to Britannia. This is the only book Camden wrote in English. It also contains the first ever alphabetical list of English proverbs, which has since been used extensively by editors of the major modern dictionaries of proverbs - Old heraldic heraldic ex-libris ('Sir Alex Ramsay of Balmain Bart.') pasted on the front pastedown.
