Bouhours, Dominique (1628-1702). Knights of Malta. "Histoire de Pierre d'Aubusson Grand-Maistre de Rhodes". Paris: Mabre-Cramoisy, 1676. 4to. Engraved frontispiece (d'Aubusson's portrait), (16), 355, (27) pp. with 3 full-page copperlate engravings ('Mahomet II' - portrait of Mehmed II, Ottoman sultan of the 15th century; 'Ville de Rhodes' - a bird's eye view; 'Zizime. Fils de Mahomet II' - portrait of Cem Sultan, son of Mehmed II), an engraving on title and other engravings in text. Orig. full-leather binding from the time with rich gilding on the front and rear desk (Christogram of the Jesuits order) and on the spine.
Binding somewhat scuffed, inside well preserved. - Pierre d'Aubusson (1423-1503) was Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and an ardent opponent of the Ottoman Empire. Probably in 1444 or 1445 he joined the Knights of St. John and then went to Rhodes to defend the island from Ottoman troops under the command of sultan Mehmed II.
