Grigory Alexeyevich Musatov (1889, Buzuluk - 1941, Prague) was a Czechoslovak painter of Russian origin. Musatov's early painting was influenced by primitivism, which was a reaction of many Russian artists of his generation to the alienation of modern civilization. In the 1920s, he mainly painted nostalgic scenes from everyday life in pre-revolutionary Russia reminiscent of naive art: his flat painting, bold colors, and shapeless figures earned him comparisons to Henri Rousseau. Gradually, his painting became more relaxed and, with its lyrical fantasy, reminiscent of Marc Chagall, while the figures of rigid petty bourgeoisie showed signs of satire and caricature.
