Giovanni Battista (or Giambattista) Piranesi (1720 in Venice - 1778 in Rome) was an Italian classical archaeologist, architect, and artist, famous for his etchings of Rome and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons" (Carceri d'invenzione).
