Giordano Ziletti
Venice
1562
"Tierra Nueva". Orig. copper-engraving from G. Ruscelli's edition of Ptolemy's Geography. Published in Venice by G. Ziletti, 1562. With title above the map. 19:25 cm (7 1/2 x 10 inch.).
Burden: The Mapping of North America, nr. 30. - Latin text on verso. - A few very small cracks in centerfold expertly restored. - The map shows the eastern coast of the United States and Canada, from Florida to Labrador. Its main focus is what we know today as the Mid-Atlantic, New England, and Nova Scotia. "Angoulesme" is likely New York Harbor, "Flora" is likely the southern coast of Long Island, and "Brisa" is probably Block Island. - Girolamo Ruscelli's edition of Ptolemy's Geographia included newly engraved copperplates by Giulio and Livio Sanuti. The curious fact is that this map is one of two that were engraved on the same plate, printed and than separated for the book. This can be seen by the fact that the plate mark of the map runs off the top of the page.
