"Europa / die erst Tafel deß Ersten Buchs". Orig. woodcut from J. Stumpf's Swiss Chronicle (Schweitzer Chronik). Published in Zurich by Ch. Froschauer, 1548. With printed tutle above the map, many cartouches, sailing ships and sea-creatures. 29,5:39,5 cm (11 3/4 x 15 1/2 inch.).

The map (oriented to the South) is a derivative of the earlier map by Sebastian Münster, but is much rarer and far more sought because of all the decorations. - Johann Stumpf (1500 in Bruchsal - 1577/78 in Zurich) was a Swiss theologian, cartographer, historian and chronicler.
