LI, (1), 199, (1) pp., 5 full-page engraved plates (engraved by Claude-Nicolas Malapeau - here his name is not given and the engravings are marked 'Chr. de Mechel dir.' instead - after Jacques Philippe Joseph de Saint-Quentin's drawings). Orig. half-leather binding from the time with rich gilding and title label on the spine.
Binding in corners a little bumped, inside clean and well preserved. - The book served as a draft for the libretto of Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro from 1786. - This edition was published by Beaumarchais's own press, which was founded in Kehl (Baden-Württemberg, Germany - titles of engravings in French and German) to avoid French censorship, and where Voltaire's problematic works were also published. The play was written in 1781 and banned soon afterwards; Beaumarchais amended the text and the ban was lifted in 1784, two years before the performance of Mozart's opera. - The fifth engraved plate modified - the woman touching Figaro has her breasts already covered.
