Joris Hoefnagel

Joris Hoefnagel (Georg Hoefnagel, also Hofnagel, Hufnagel; 1542, Antwerp – 1600, Vienna) was a Dutch painter, miniaturist, engraver, and cartographer who was also active in literary circles. He traveled throughout Italy and in 1578 moved to Munich to work for the Bavarian dukes Albrecht V and Wilhelm V. During 1590–1591, he was employed by Rudolf II. However, Hoefnagel did not settle in Prague, but rather in Frankfurt am Main, where a large colony of Dutch emigrants was based. While traveling through Europe, he produced a large number of topographical miniatures. His drawing studies served as models for the engravings by Franz Hogenberg, which were published by the printer and publisher Georg Braun in the now-classic six-volume work *Civitates orbis terrarum* (Cologne, 1572–1617). In addition to vedute, Hoefnagel masterfully depicted plants and small animals (beetles, butterflies, reptiles). In doing so, he drew upon both the naturalistic and emblematic traditions of 15th-century Flemish book illumination.
