Axmann, Joseph

Josef Axmann (1793-1873) was a graphic artist who dealt with copper engraving, steel engraving and from 1843 also daguerreotype, or the method of taking the first permanent photographic images, which was discovered in 1839 by Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre (1787-1851). Axmann came from Brno and went to Vienna to study at the Academy in 1811. He worked in Vienna and from 1866 in Salzburg, where he also died. He was the author of more than 500 religious engravings, portraits, vignettes and vedutas, mainly based on drawings by Vincenzo Morstadt (1802-1875).
